Self-Storage and Amazon Lockers: Great Idea or Hassle?

(3 min read)

As self-storage continues to be a great business to own and operate, owners often look for ways to add value for customers and increase their visibility within the community. There are lots of different ways to increase profit that we have covered in other blog posts. Today we will look at Amazon Hub Lockers and what’s involved with hosting.

Information is readily available on the Amazon Hub website here.

What’s an Amazon Hub? An Amazon Hub is a network of package pickup locations across the world. Especially useful for those living in rural areas  or in communities without options for package management, these hubs provide a secure locker where Amazon packages can be delivered and secured. The customer can then pick up their package from the Amazon Hub at their convenience.

What options are available? Amazon Hubs offer lockers and apartment lockers. The locker available to a small business is a “secure, self-serve, fully automated kiosk” allowing people to receive their packages. The apartment lockers “provide property managers a contact-less and convenient solution to package management.” The apartment lockers can also hold orders purchased from other retailers – not just Amazon.

What does an Amazon Hub cost? The Amazon Hubs are installed at no cost to the business owner on whose property it will be installed.

What are the benefits of hosting an Amazon Hub? The main benefit is increased traffic to your self-storage business. Consider that a potential client may have never known your self-storage existed, but after multiple pickups at your Amazon Hub, they may be interested in using your business when a self- storage need arises for them. Each hub is given a name from Amazon in order to maintain the system and to allow for the Hub to be easily relocated if ever necessary. Amazon Hubs are listed on the Amazon website as an alternate delivery option and your business will see increased traffic as a result.

Is hosting an Amazon Hub a hassle or headache? Amazon offers locker support to customers 24/7. The direct Amazon customer service phone number is easily found on every locker.

Adding an Amazon Hub comes at no cost to the business owner. It generates additional foot traffic that may not otherwise come to your location. There is no support or work required as a business owner. Amazon handles all customer service. Additionally, there is no package handling by the business owner either, which eliminates any hassle or excess work. Another use and benefit of the Amazon Hub is that returns can also be dropped at a Hub location. This provides additional foot traffic from people returning packages that did not work out.

An excellent profile of self-storage owners who added an Amazon Hub can be found on Inside Self-Storage here. It’s worth time to read about their positive experience and the traffic it has generated.
