Safely Store Appliances in Self-Storage

Safe, long-term storage of appliances is sometimes necessary. Self-storage businesses come in handy when you have bigger items to store to give more living space at home or during a time of transition.

Storing appliances is not as simple as storing items like furniture or boxes, but it’s not difficult either. Follow these simple steps to safely store appliances in a secure, self-storage unit.

Select a climate-controlled unit when possible.

Climate-controlled storage will keep all appliances at a consistent temperature during storage. This helps prolong the life of the appliance and limits the temperature fluctuation, which can produce rust.

Empty the appliance completely.

If you’re storing a refrigerator, now is the time to clean it out. The refrigerator cannot be stored with food items left inside.

Removing all items inside the appliance when applicable. If you use the bottom drawer for oven storage, remove all pots, pans, and lids.

Clean the appliance well.

Before storage, it is necessary to clean all appliances well. Kitchen appliances, especially, are at risk of attracting pests if left with food, crumbs, and bits intact in storage. Clean all oil spots from the windows in the oven and remove all crumbs from the door jambs. Refrigerators and freezers will need to be thoroughly cleaned and defrosted. Once the ice is thawed, drain the water from the pan. Leave the refrigerator to thaw and dry outside prior to storage.

All appliances should be wiped down with a clean and dry cloth prior to storage. Refrigerators need to be stored with the door left open so that odors don’t accumulate inside the appliance. All appliances should be wiped down on the outside and all dust removed from the exterior of the unit as well. Vacuuming the evaporator coils is necessary as dust on appliances can be a fire hazard in the future.

Most appliances must be transported to storage and stored in an upright position. Appliances can be ruined with improper storage, making storing them a complete waste of money.

Store appliances off the ground on a pallet when possible.

Depending on the type of unit, it’s best to store the appliance off the ground on a pallet. This makes it easier to move, and it keeps it directly off the floor. Cover the appliances with a sheet or a thin cloth to prevent the accumulation of dust on the appliances. It’s best to avoid stacking items on top of appliances that are not designed for that type of load.
