Expert Packing Tips When Using Self-Storage Long-term

Everyone using self-storage has good intentions about keeping things organized in the rented unit they occupy. However, there are 6 essential steps to follow to use a storage unit wisely and make the most of the space. These 6 steps can help you have the best storage experience.

  1. Choose the right size storage unit.
  2. Invest in quality packing materials.
  3. Store items using shelving when possible.
  4. Break down significant items when possible.
  5. Protect against moisture and pests.
  6. Check often.

Choose the right size storage unit.

It’s important to assess the amount of storage that you need. If you are moving a student home from college, it’s easy to figure out how much storage is necessary to hold the items from a dorm room or small apartment. Get the size you need and don’t overspend on a unit that is too big.

Additionally, you will want a storage business that is secure, gated, well-lit, and well-maintained. If 24/7 access is important, look for one that offers it. Climate-controlled storage is a nice benefit so that whatever is stored will not deteriorate from harsh weather conditions.

Invest in quality packing materials.

Pack items in quality moving boxes that are sturdy for stacking. When storing furniture and other large items, plastic wrap on big rolls is essential to protect the items from dings and other issues. Select new, durable boxes over old, used ones. Keep in mind to get boxes that are various sizes, but also not too large. Large boxes can seem like a great idea, but once a large box is full and heavy, it becomes challenging to move it. Label everything. A picture of the box contents taped to the outside of the box is a great way to quickly assess your storage if there’s something you need to retrieve.

Store items using shelving when possible.

Some self-storage businesses have shelving available in units or for rent. Shelving makes it easier to keep a unit neat. In older storage units where the floor may not be as nice or clean, shelving units can make a difference in keeping the bottom boxes and stored items in good condition. If shelves are available, it’s probably worth the few extra bucks to rent them.

Break down oversized items when possible.

Are you storing furniture and other large items? It’s best to disassemble any items. Once upon a time, there was a beautiful drop-leaf table with claw feet that sadly became a casualty in storage because it was used to hold heavy boxes rather than being folded flat and stored properly. True story. Don’t make the mistake of using furniture pieces to hold heavy items just because they’re furniture. Over time, heat and moisture can negatively affect the furniture’s construction and cause it to collapse.

Protect against moisture and pests.

Avoid storing any items directly on the floor. Use pest-repellant devices and traps to protect your items in storage. If shelving isn’t an option, find some pallets and use those for stacking boxes. Use rat poison on the ground under the pallets to deter mice and rats. Covering items with a tarp across the top to keep any leaks from touching the boxes or furniture directly is important. You don’t want this to be type and prevent airflow – you just want it to cover so that water can run off and not seep into your items.

Check often.

Check-in often at a rented storage unit to assess your items and check for leaks or pests. Bring any of these things to management’s attention as it may be something they’re unaware of on the property.
