Spring Cleaning Maintenance Checklist

With the start of spring, it’s time to focus on spring cleaning and maintenance at self-storage facilities. Depending on a business’s geographic location, some tasks may not be necessary for every business owner to complete. The goal of spring maintenance is to keep everything in good condition to avoid expensive repairs.

Spring maintenance and routine cleaning are an essential part of running a self-storage business so that costly repairs are scheduled and completed when it is convenient rather than when it is an emergency. Regular maintenance enables owners to handle issues before an emergency occurs.

Keeping a maintenance calendar is necessary so that owners know what’s been done and what is left to complete. There is no need to waste time doing the same work twice because it wasn’t logged the first time or someone else completed the duties.

Maintenance checklists are great for keeping track of necessary tasks among staff. This is useful on busy days so work isn’t repeated and on slow days so that time can be used effectively. Maintenance should include daily tasks that must be completed frequently like cleaning an office, bathroom, customer areas, and parking lots. It also includes tasks that are completed weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annually.

Regular maintenance on a business keeps the property looking clean and fresh and slows the deterioration of the facility. It also allows for planning for improvements in advance of an emergency. It’s much easier to save money over time for a new garage door than it is to find that 3 of them need replacing on the same day.

Maintenance should be something that all staff are involved in. This means that when staff are having a slower day, they take the initiative to see what needs to be done and tackle the job now. Creating a culture of employees who see a need and tackle it is essential to the success of any business.

We have created a free, downloadable checklist to get you started on a regular maintenance schedule. It’s easy to import into Excel or other spreadsheet software. It’s also easy to change and update to meet the needs of a specific business or property. We included the most common regular maintenance required, and we added items that make sense in states like Florida where we see lots of hurricane activity.
